Choosing a Wedding Venue

After choosing a partner, choosing and booking the reception venue is high on the agenda – you want it to be perfect for you.  You can hold your reception practically anywhere from your garage to a castle.  What’s important is that you’re happy with it!

Location is obviously important.  An excessive journey from service to reception may not be what either yourselves or your guests want.  However, trips of 30 minutes or so are fine – remember your guests will often leave for the reception whilst you and your family are having photos taken.  Also, if you’ve hired that Ferrari for the day then you might want to take it for a spin.  You can find car hire companies in our service directory.

Once you have decided on the area you need to consider the size of the guest list.  Usually everyone who has been invited to the ceremony is asked to the reception.  However, some couples prefer to have a smaller family gathering with perhaps a larger informal party later in the evening.  It’s your day!

Next you need to consider budget.  Decide how much you want to spend.  If you haven’t already, we suggest you use our budget planner.

Wedding venues may make a charge for hiring the venue and then a price per head.  There may also be a corkage charge if you decide to supply your own wine.

So now you might have a shortlist.  What else is important to you?

What type of service do you require?  Some reception venues may offer different types of service such as silver service, buffets, table service.  Again, full details of what’s offered can be found in our venue listings.

What other facilities do you want the reception venue to have?  Some people prefer the bar to be in the same room as reception is to be held, some would like a separate bar.  What gardens does the venue have for photography?

If you have guests travelling from afar who wish to stay over you may want to know if the reception venue has rooms, how many there are and if you can negotiate a discount for your guests.
