Tell me about your business Sharon?
My business is in the floristry trade. I am a commercial florist and I design and create floral arrangements for special occasions, functions and weddings.
I began solely doing weddings, and over the years I have gained a lot of experience and knowledge in the wedding flower industry.

How long have you been trading?
It will be 20 years now in April. I’m thinking of having a party.

What are your opening hours?
9.00am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 1.00pm to 5.30pm on Sunday

Do brides need to make an appointment with you?
Yes. Some brides travel quite a distance to speak to me about their wedding flowers and if I am already in a consultation with a bride they may have up to a two hour wait to see me, or if it’s late in the day I may not have time to do a consultation therefore they may have had a wasted journey.

What style of floristry do you specialise in?
Our styles of bouquets are wide ranging but we find the requests for more modern designs are increasing since we started stocking tropical flowers.

Will a brides wedding date affect the choice of flowers that she can have on her wedding day?
It wouldn’t affect the choice as most flowers are available all year round, however I feel it is better to work with flowers that are in season.

Do the chosen flowers have to tie in with the colour of the bridesmaid’s dresses or can a bride choose something plain or equally choose something different?
Flowers are an accessory, so just as you would choose shoes to compliment an outfit you should choose your flowers to enhance your dresses.

What wedding flowers does a bride require, i.e. what is a necessity and what is desirable?
There are traditions, but there are no rules. Anything is possible.

Do you offer a wide range of floral arrangements?
We try to give our customers as much choice as possible. To help them visualise the final product we keep a large selection of books, and a portfolio of our work. These will soon be displayed on our new website www.sharonpeakerweddings.com

What seems to be the most popular range of flowers with today’s brides?
The posy has been the most popular for a number of years, however this year the shower bouquet is really making a comeback.

What other factors should a bride take into consideration when deciding on her wedding flowers?
The colours and styles of the dresses and any themes they are considering for the wedding.

How far in advance should a bride book her wedding with a florist?
As soon as a date has been set a bride should set about booking the date with her chosen florist.

Giving the average wedding what should a bride expect to budget for her wedding flowers?
The average wedding flowers would cost approximately £500

When is payment due?
The final payment is due one week before the wedding.

Have you in your experience dealt with any unique requests from brides?
We had a request from a bride who was having a seaside themed wedding.  We were asked to supply tall vases for table centres with real goldfish in them. I refused to use the goldfish because it would be cruel to have them in such a narrow space swimming in between stems, so I purchased blue and white glass fish and suspended them inside the water.  The water magnified the fish, and the colours matched in perfectly with the wedding. It was a great success.

Do you also supply vases, candelabras, etc, for rental?
Yes. Included in our wedding information pack we have a hire list stating what items we have available and what the hire price is.

Do you cater for more that one wedding per day?
I like to give each bride and grooms wedding our individual attention therefore our policy is not to take more than one booking per day.

Do you transport and set up the flowers both at the ceremony and the reception?
We have various service plans depending on what the bride wishes to do and what her budget is. We do deliver the bouquets and buttonholes to the bride’s house in the morning as part of our standard service.

Is this included in final price or is this something extra that the bride would pay for?
Our standard service includes delivery to the bride’s house and setting up the ceremony anything after that may be at a charge, depending on distance, etc. Each bride is given a breakdown of her bill well before the wedding so there are no hidden charges.

Sharon’s Top Tips:

  1. Once you have picked the date book your florist. Good florists get booked up early.
  2. When looking through wedding magazines or websites, if you see any bouquets or arrangements you like keep the picture and start a scrap book, it may help later on.
  3. If you have a limited budget, don’t try to make it go further by doing lots of small arrangements. One or two large arrangements can look more effective.
  4. Learn to delegate. Ask your bridesmaids to help with the collecting and moving the day before so you remain stress free.
  5. Make sure your florist will deliver the flowers to you on the morning of the wedding.
  6. Ask your florist how to hold your bouquet properly as it will look better in photographs.
  7. Enquire before your wedding about getting your bouquet preserved, it is better to have this organised before the big day.
